National Nuclear Security Administration

U.S. Department of Energy
Nuclear Testing Archive

The Nevada Field Office of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration opened the Coordination and Information Center (now referred to as the Nuclear Testing Archive) July 17, 1981, to collect and make available all historical documents, records, and data dealing with radioactive fallout from all U.S. testing of nuclear devices.

The Nuclear Testing Archive collects and consolidates, for long-term preservation, historical documents, records, and data. The collection includes documentation on the detection and measurement of radioactive fallout and the related factors resulting from nuclear test device activities at the Nevada Test Site, TRINITY event, Pacific Proving Grounds, and other on-continent test locations, as well as information on the health effects of radiation, and various related scientific and technical studies and reports.

This collection of over 386,000 documents is available to the public through use of the Nuclear Testing Archive (Public Reading Facility). This facility maintains more than 40,000 documents relating to Human Radiation Experiments by our predecessor, the Atomic Energy Commission, as well as over 346,000 documents dealing with the U.S. nuclear testing program.

The bibliographic information for the collection at Nuclear Testing Archive can be accessed through OpenNet. OpenNet is DOE's bibliographic database containing declassified and publicly available documents. It is an automated searchable database which enables the interested stakeholder to identify documents of interest, determine their location within the DOE complex, and obtain ordering information.

The Nuclear Testing Archive also maintains the complete DOE Human Radiation Experiments collection. These documents are available in full text retrieval through DOE Openness: Human Radiation Experiments site.

Normal library services, such as assistance in locating documents, are provided at no charge. Other services, such as copying and proxy research by staff, will be provided according to a fee schedule.

The Nuclear Testing Archive is located at 755 East Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, Nevada, and is open to visitors from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays.

About the Author

My Fathers repeated radiation exposures compromised his health and mine, altered my DNA, and since as a result I can't reproduce, thankfully the suffering from this will stop with me.  Chief Moore was still classified above Top Secret and under Q-Clearance during his entire lifetime.  As a result, we were isolated and insulated while we fought his exotic cancers as a military guinea pig for 20+ years, from 1969 to 1989 at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital.  It has altered our lives in ways no one saw coming.   Add the consequences of another 25+ years after his death and to still be learning about who he really was is inspiring.

Our family has suffered the impact, like so many others effected by the US Government's atomic, nuclear and thermonuclear and human experiments in the Pacific Proving Grounds.   The story continues, so I might as well tell it while the fight goes on for the government to acknowledge the health crisis they caused for 2nd Gens and provide some mechanism for screening and healthcare services from military or VA medical professionals who are informed of our compromised state of health.
