THE LOST SQUADRON

Picture

Homer Henry's

Homer Henry, a gunner on the B-17 that was escorting the P-38's to Europe when they were forces to return and emergency land in Greenland.  Homer had just one roll of film with him for the trip to England when his orders took him to England with General Paul Tibbets and Mission Bolero.  He timed well the use of those shots, and provides an intimate view of how the men set up camp, occupied their time, cooked and slept while they awaited their rescue and provisions to get off the glacier.

One of the planes, "Glacier Girl" had been rescued from beneath 270 feet of ice and restored to flying condition.  Glacier Girl was brought in for General Tibbett's 90th bithday celebration in 2006, and Homer had traveled to PDK Airport in Atlanta, to see the Glacier Girl 'one last time' .   In a rare time he ever had allowed those photos out of his control, at his son's encouragement, he allowed us the opportunity to scan them to be able to share with you.
I did my best to keep them in sequential order.
